Idlewild is a community in Yates Township, located just east of Baldwin in southeast Lake County, a rural part of northwestern lower Michigan.

For the first half of the 20th century, it was one of the few resorts where African-Americans were allowed to vacation and purchase property, before discrimination was outlawed in 1964 through the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Idlewild was also listed in the “Greenbook”, this was a guide in 1936 for African Americans to know where they were welcomed or accepted.

Idlewild Initiatives

Beautification and Revitalization

  • This community-led effort will include step-by-step cleanup, landscaping, and structural enhancements to restore dignity, safety, and pride to this historic community. Today, Idlewild stands at a crossroads. Vacant structures, overgrown lots, and blight now obscure a town that once represented pride, freedom, and excellence. Last summer in 2025 we successfully revitalized the beach. This will be a continuous effort, along with new areas of beautification in Idlewild.

Education In The Wild

  • Education in the Wild, takes place in July 2026 and marks our third year serving youth ages 2–19 in Idlewild (Baldwin) and surrounding urban communities. This immersive day in the Manistee National Forest includes swimming, water activities, fishing, environmental learning, free meals, giveaways, and a robust college fair. Our goal is to empower youth to explore the outdoors, learn about environmental stewardship, discover future educational pathways, and build confidence while enjoying Idlewild’s natural beauty.

Greek Divine Nine Weekend

  • The Divine Nine Greek in the Wild Weekend (July 31–August 1, 2026), culminates with a historic Beach Day on August 1st. This astonishing gathering brings members of the Divine Nine to Idlewild Michigan to honor it's legacy, network, and celebrate excellence alongside the shores of Idlewild Lake. Beyond comprehensible fellowship, we are intentionally fostering economic growth by encouraging members to invest in Idlewild through property ownership and chapter homes—creating an impactful and long lasting community development.
