Idlewild is a community in Yates Township, located just east of Baldwin in southeast Lake County, a rural part of northwestern lower Michigan.
For the first half of the 20th century, it was one of the few resorts where African-Americans were allowed to vacation and purchase property, before discrimination was outlawed in 1964 through the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Idlewild was also listed in the “Greenbook”, this was a guide in 1936 for African Americans to know where they were welcomed or accepted.
